Do not go to Italy in August! All of Europe is off the month of August. many cities are hot and humid and very crowded in August. September is a much better time to visit. Climate is better, crowds have diminished and you can enjoy life in Italy. Walking the streets of Rome when there are no crowds is much more enjoyable. The trattorias are less crowded and the stores are less crowded. tart your day at a local bar. Have an espresso or cappuccino and a sweet roll. Walk around, shop and enjoy the sites. For lunch stop in a bar for a Panini and a beer, wine or soda or visit a trattoria for a sit down meal of pasta and salad. In the evening Stop for Happy Hour or go to dinner at a Pizzeria, Trattoria or Ristorante. Try different foods and local wines. I always order wine in a carat (not a bottle). It is cheaper and very good wine. After dinner stop for a gelato in a gelateria. They have a huge number of selections and usually will let you try a small spoonful of several flavors. You can get it in a cup or cone.
